Happy Halloween!

Here's a poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow to get you in the spooky mood:

Haunted Houses
All houses wherein men have lived and died

Are haunted houses. Through the open doors

The harmless phantoms on their errands glide,

With feet that make no sound upon the floors.

recipe :: fried green tomatoes

...No one is born a great cook, one learns by doing.
 --  Julia Child

Fried green tomatoes are entrenched in my memory.  Every fall Gam would head over to the farmer she befriended and pick up a bushel or two.  Most of them went into making her famous green tomato pickle, but I always begged that a few be reserved and fried up.  For me, they equal home, the hearth, memories of carefree moments.

The flower that follows the sun does so even in cloudy days.  --  Robert Leighton

My mailbox is overflowing with catalogs tempting me with beautiful blossoms.  As daylight hours diminish, my thoughts turn to
spring.  Daffodils, tulips and hyacinth - this is the time to plant bulbs.  As I can't possibly grow every flower from every catalog
in my possession, I decided to make a few daffodils of my own.  Here is a trumpet daffodil, a daffodil with multiple petals, and
a classic white narcissus with orange center. I can almost smell their heavenly scent!

it's in the details :: Valentino Couture 2013

I am especially grateful that I have been able to keep my own style over the decades, in spite
of the many changes that have taken place in the world of fashion and in its business.
--  Valentino Garavani

I like to knit.  I have a degree in weaving.  But what I really love is embroidery, with or without the beads.  This season no one is adding the embroidered flourishes like Valentino's atelier.  The tweed coat with gold work details is swoon worthy.  The contrast of mannish fabric with the girly gold implies that a woman can hold her own in a man's world, but does so on her own terms.  The coat that turns an every day moment into an event.

Trick or Treat! - Halloween Painting

At first cock-crow the ghosts must go
Back to their quiet graves below.
 -- Theodosia Garrison

A little more Halloween fun.  I love these laser cut wood bases for painting.  They have me thinking of how I could apply such technology to my fine art.  I need to do some research on it.  Anyway, I thought you might enjoy the latest addition to my holiday decorations.

Designer Crafts Connection :: Halloween Googly Eye Barrette

Tis now the very witching time of night,
When churchyards yawn and hell itself breathes out
Contagion to this world.
--  William Shakespeare

Inspired by the cartoon Scooby Dooby Doo, googly eyes peak out from your hair when wearing this barrette.  It's an easy peasy project that will take you only minutes to complete.  You can adapt it to any size barrette from small side clips to extra long pony tail holders for thick hair.  Add or subtract the number of googly eyes as required.

Day of the Dead Door Decoration

Hay más tiempo que vida - Mexican saying.
(There is more time than life.)

Most of my adult life has been spent living within Latino communities.  I didn't really feel the influence until I moved to St. Louis. Over the years my cooking was transformed from traditional Southern to one filled with fresh and dried peppers, corn tortillas (not the kind with a shelf life of a month or longer) and the various fruits and vegetables I can no longer find with ease at my local grocery store.  What was once a staple is now a specialty item.  While Day of the Dead  (Dia de Meurtos) is Mexican in heritage, the holiday is one honored by many. In keeping with this upcoming holiday, I made a door decoration. It is colorful and sparkly, acknowledging that despite death, life goes on.
