International Day to End the Violence Against Women - Wear Orange!

UN Women End Violence Against Women

Today is International End Violence Against Women Day. Look at that statistic.  1 in 3 women and girls experience violence within their lifetime.  The violence can be outright such as rape or more subtle like emotional abuse.  This problem is worldwide and not particular to one class, race, or religion.  Sexism is rampant, ugly and violent.

7 Lessons I've learned about crafting a creative career

Crochet book

You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough.  --  Mae West

I recently read a great blog post by artist, curator and teacher Sergio Gomez on the 7 lessons he has learned about the art world.  I found myself nodding along as I read through it and decided to add my two cents.  Here are 7 lessons I've learned about crafting a creative career.

Holiday Ornament Blog Hop :: Bird House Ornament

Ornament hop

Mom's favorite holiday was Christmas.  Owning a catering company, she had to get ready in August as she didn't have a day off once November rolled around until long after New Year's   She used to tease me calling me her Little Scrooge as I never did much for the holiday.  I wish she could see me now.  She passed away five years ago and I know she would chuckle over the fact that I am loving the holiday and have bee busy since July in my elf shop.  Enjoy this blog hop featuring products The Robin's Nest and Smoothfoam.  Designers from the Craft and Hobby Association have different styles, so you are sure to gain lots of inspiration as you hop along through the participating bloggers.

Weave a Bracelet Cuff

Exciting news to announce!! I'm designing weaving projects for The Authentic Knitting Board Company!!  They have a great new product that allows you to both loom knit or weave using the same piece of equipemnt.  You could make gifts for everyone on your holiday gift list!  This bracelet is a snap, taking only a couple of hours to complete.  I think of it as the adult version of the friendship bracelet.

Birthdays and New Year Resolutions

Lindsay Silhouette

God gave us the gift of life; it is up to us to give ourselves the gift of living well.  --  Voltaire

This time last year I sat in bed recovering from a cold looking on Zillow at property in St. Louis.  Should I move?  Should I not move?  What exactly should I do?  Birthdays are a reminder to live your life to the fullest.  That afternoon I called a realtor.

Writing Essentials

IMG 3535

So long as you write what you wish to write, that is all that matters; and whether it matters for ages or only for hours, nobody can say.
― Virginia WoolfA Room of One's Own

Before I moved, most of my blog writing took place in the dining room.  I had an office, but it was unheated and not air conditioned, so generally uncomfortable for 8-9 months of the year.  I made do, but now that I have a comfy office, I don't know how I lived without it!  I can spread out, leave bills and other paper work in neat little piles. It's my private space, something all my own.  My daughter is even reluctant to enter it which is a serious bonus.  Don't get me wrong, I love my daughter, but she has a knack for interrupting me when I'm deep in thought.

Making Art

Don't think about making art, just get it done. Let everyone else decide if it's good or bad, whether they love it or hate it. While they are deciding, make even more art. --  Andy Warhol

I'm excited.  I am at the beginning of what I know will prove to be an entirely new line of work.  I am using an upcoming exhibition as an excuse to push these new ideas out of my head and onto the embroidery frame.  The task is daunting.  This new line of work leaped in front of me just three weeks ago and begs to be entirely bead embroidered.  There are no short cuts with this medium.  I sew each bead into place one bead at a time.  By the time I finish, I will have stitched over 20,000 beads and sequins onto a silk substructure. And that's just one piece!  My hands ache and my back hurts, but I feel so incredibly energized!
