Desinger Craft Connection :: Hebe Cord Napkin Ring

Obermeyer napkin ring

The belly rules the mind.  --  Spanish Proverb

Hebe Cord is  a nylon cord from Sullivan's USA that is great for knitting,  knotting, braiding, tatting and crocheting.  The fabric it makes feels quite substantial.  Thinking about wanting to have a few friends over for dinner, I used it to make some napking rings in order to give my table a more polished look.

Guage: 5sts=1", 3 rows=1"

Finished napkion ring when flat is 7" x 1"

To create 4 napkin rings you will need:
2  packages of Hebe Cord ( I used medium pink).
4 buttons (vintage from yoru stash or a novelty one of choice)
B crochet hook
Tapestry needle
Sewing needle
Sewing thread.

1.    Chain 33 stitches.  Turn and insert hook into 4th chain from the hook.  The first 3 chains = 1dc.  1dc in each chain until the end.

2.      Chain 3, turn and 1dc in each chain, inserting your hook under both halves of the stitch.

3.       Repeat step 2 until you have completed 3 rows, approximately 1".

4.      When you have completed the final row, complete 2more dc in the same chain.  This will make a scallop on the coner.  1sc into final row edge.  3dc into the next row along the edge, 1sc into the final row and then 3 dc into next corner.  *Skip a stitch and 1sc into the next stitch.  Skip a stitch and 3dc into the next stitch. *  Repeat from * to * ending with 3 dc in the next corner. 1sc into the row edge.  3dc into the next row along the edge.  1sc into the fianl corner and then 3dc into the next corner. Repeat from * to * ending with 3dc in the next corner.  Slip stitch along the ttop of the first scallop.  Wehn you are at the top of the scallop, chain 8, slip stitch to teh top of the scallop along the next corener.  Turn and  work 10 sc obe the 8 chains.  (This creates the loop for the closure.) Slip stitch to the top of  the scallop. Fasten off.

5.  Sew in all tails.

6.  Sew a button onto the ring opposite from the loop.  Block the piece flat if stitches are slightly distorted.  Button and use for dinner.

7.  Hint!  Make the rings in Gold, Orange or Red and use a button shaped like a turkey to add a festive touch to your Thanksgiving table.

Hint - This pattern also makes a nice bracelet cuff as my 8 year old niece pointed out.  Add chains to make a  length to fit your wrist, otherwise this size is suitable for a young child.

I spin and weave and knit my words and visions until a life starts to take shape. — Laurie Halse Anders0n

Need a quick project with a bit of sparkle to chase the winter blues?  The necklace looks great paired with a casual sweater and jeans, but could easily work with a shell and blazer for the office.

Designer Crafts Connection :: Christmas Wreath of Favorite Ornaments

Christmas Wreath

Christmas is the season for kindling the fire of hospitality in the hall, the genial flame of charity in the heart.  --  Washington Irving

I've inherited scores of ornaments from family, especially Mom.  Christmas was her absolute favorite holiday.  As I began to unpack everything over Thanksgiving, it became quickly obvious that our tree wasn't going to hold our extensive collection.  Rather than pack away the excess of ornaments, I decided to make a wreath with them.  I love the final result, but better yet I upcycled the wire base from a previous project that was looking a tattered and tired after months in the sun.

The flower that follows the sun does so even in cloudy days.  --  Robert Leighton

My mailbox is overflowing with catalogs tempting me with beautiful blossoms.  As daylight hours diminish, my thoughts turn to
spring.  Daffodils, tulips and hyacinth - this is the time to plant bulbs.  As I can't possibly grow every flower from every catalog
in my possession, I decided to make a few daffodils of my own.  Here is a trumpet daffodil, a daffodil with multiple petals, and
a classic white narcissus with orange center. I can almost smell their heavenly scent!

Designer Crafts Connection :: Halloween Googly Eye Barrette

Tis now the very witching time of night,
When churchyards yawn and hell itself breathes out
Contagion to this world.
--  William Shakespeare

Inspired by the cartoon Scooby Dooby Doo, googly eyes peak out from your hair when wearing this barrette.  It's an easy peasy project that will take you only minutes to complete.  You can adapt it to any size barrette from small side clips to extra long pony tail holders for thick hair.  Add or subtract the number of googly eyes as required.

Designer Crafts Connection :: Rowlux® Illusion Film Design Challenge & Blog Hop

Color is the fruit of life.  --  Guillaume Apollinaire

I'm a magpie.  I love shiny objects and rich saturated color.  When a sample packet of Rowlux® Illusion Film arrived in the mail,
I instantly fell in love with the product.  These 12" x 12" sheets are perfect for a multitude of projects.  Inspired by the roses in
my front garden, I made this bracelet.  The colors shift with the light, hot pink, light pink, magenta, deep red, fire engine red.  The
illusion of depth and motion is the result of thousands of tiny parabolic lenses that are molded into the surface of both sides of
of the material.  These lenses create a pattern of light reflection and refraction resulting in stunningly brilliant optical effects.

Designer Crafts Connection :: Family Celebration Treasure Box

Having a place to go - is a home.  Having someone to love - is a family.  Having both - is a blessing.  --  Donna Hedges

This month's blog hop theme is family celebrations and it has me thinking of Mom.  She would have turned 70 this month.
While she loved Christmas (as in seriously over the top with a tree in every room), Mom celebrated family year round.  Upon
her death my brother and I found boxes full of photos, report cards, and childhood drawings.  She had every card and letter
I sent her while in college.  These small moments are the ones she truly treasured most as each box was covered in a pretty
paper or fabric.  It's a lovely tradition and one I want to pass along to my own daughter by making this box to fill.

Designer Crafts Connection :: Etchall Challenge

You can't use up creativity.  The more you use, the more you have.  --  Maya Angelou

I haven't experimented with etching in years and even then I only used a dremel.  When the
opportunity came about to participate in the etchall® Design Challenge, I jumped at it.  The product
has been a crafting mainstay for 80 years.  I want try it out in my art, but rather than experiment first
on glass sheets, I gave myself the challenge of trying it on the curved surface of my favorite pitcher.
It's so easy to use!

Designer Crafts Connection Blog Hop :: Pearly Queen Dog Collar

Pearly queen dog col

Real friendship, like real poetry, is extremely rare - and precious as a pearl.  --  Tahar Ben Jelloun

Toony joined our family last fall when we adopted her from the local Humane Society.  She is quite a character and brings us
endless joy.   As she is no ordinary pooch, she deserves a collar befitting her ladyship.  Inspired by the history of the Pearly
Kings and Queens of London, I made her this pearly collar using buttons from my stash.
