Smoothfoam Design :: 4th of July Wreath

Obermeyer-July-4yh-decoration-wreath

For what avail the plough or sail, or land or life, if freedom fail?  ~Ralph Waldo Emerson

I design projects for Smoothfoam and love working with the product.  It's affordable, lightweight, easy to carve, dsand and paint.  I used 10 smoothfoam balls to make this holiday wreath.  It's true,I am bcomign my mother.  She loved each and eveyr holiday in equal measure.  I used to think it a bit over the top, but now, I can't help myself, I love them too.  For the directions to this project and many others, check out theSmoothfoam Blog!

Festive Cranberry Muffin

I'm just someone who likes cooking and for whom sharing food is a form of expression.  --  Maya Angelou

Cranberries need to be pulled from ranks of sauce and given their full due as a fruit.  These muffins are the perfect blend of sweet and tart. The bright dots of red color add a festive note to what is essentially a basic muffin.

I adapted this recipe from The Joy of Cooking by Mrs. Irma S. Rombauer.  This is my basic go to cookbook for anything and everything even as a vegetarian.  Gam was friends with Mrs. Rombauer and did much of her initial recipe testing.  Gam was the kind of baker who kept a notebook of the weather as she baked.  An overcast sky always meant baking times would be slightly longer.  She instinctively understood the chemical reactions of baking soda, baking powder and the various liquids such as milk, sour cream or yogurt.

Washi Craft Tape Beaded Ornament

©2013-Lindsay-Obermeyer-Christmas-Ornament-Washi-Tape

Christmas doesn't come from a store, maybe Christmas perhaps means a little bit more....
Dr. Suess from How the Grinch Stole Chrismas!

Grandma loved to make ornaments using sequins, pins and ribbon on a Smoothfoam base.  She'd buy intricate kits and then spend all afternoon making her "treasures" as she called them.   This is my version with a contemporary twist using craft tape to cover the surface before adding the sequins.  My version takes less time to make (approximately an hour), but still has a colorful sparkle.  Try your own tape and sequin combo or make my winterberry.

Designer Crafts Connection :: Christmas Wreath of Favorite Ornaments

Christmas Wreath

Christmas is the season for kindling the fire of hospitality in the hall, the genial flame of charity in the heart.  --  Washington Irving

I've inherited scores of ornaments from family, especially Mom.  Christmas was her absolute favorite holiday.  As I began to unpack everything over Thanksgiving, it became quickly obvious that our tree wasn't going to hold our extensive collection.  Rather than pack away the excess of ornaments, I decided to make a wreath with them.  I love the final result, but better yet I upcycled the wire base from a previous project that was looking a tattered and tired after months in the sun.

Holiday Ornament Blog Hop :: Bird House Ornament

Ornament hop

Mom's favorite holiday was Christmas.  Owning a catering company, she had to get ready in August as she didn't have a day off once November rolled around until long after New Year's   She used to tease me calling me her Little Scrooge as I never did much for the holiday.  I wish she could see me now.  She passed away five years ago and I know she would chuckle over the fact that I am loving the holiday and have bee busy since July in my elf shop.  Enjoy this blog hop featuring products The Robin's Nest and Smoothfoam.  Designers from the Craft and Hobby Association have different styles, so you are sure to gain lots of inspiration as you hop along through the participating bloggers.

Happy Halloween!

Here's a poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow to get you in the spooky mood:

Haunted Houses
All houses wherein men have lived and died

Are haunted houses. Through the open doors

The harmless phantoms on their errands glide,

With feet that make no sound upon the floors.
