practice and the creative genius :: a response to the Elizabeth Gilbert's TED talk.

Does artistry always lead to anguish as is custom in much of our Society?  I can't begin to tell you how much I appreciate this brief talk by Elizabeth Gilbert.  In February, I was back in the saddle showing up for my job as she puts it.  Everyday I woke early, did my household chores and then clocked in to work on either a design or fine art project. At first it was exhilarating. I had survived. I was BACK!   You see when you've had a stroke and your body is left paralyzed, you can't talk, you can barely read, your whole existence seem to disappear at least the world as you knew it, but unfortunately you are left with enough memories of life before the stroke to tease and taunt you.  Well, I was back, but only at half level.  I was tired all the time, living on coffee and depressed as all get out.  Could I chase my genie, that allusive fairy who kept teasing me with flights of creativity.  Or was it all over?  Had my life stopped in February 2014.  Well, I want it known for the record, that it hasn't stopped.  I am still showing up every day to do my job as an artist.

video love :: Tie Dyeing in Mali

But I was thinking of a plan to dye one's whisker's green.  -- Lewis Carroll

This video is a great introduction to the craft of tie dye in Mali.  The tradition
dates back centuries.  I love the colorful results from just a few basic
folds.

video love :: seventeen evergreen (yarn zombies!)

Seventeen Evergreen - Polarity Song from Lucky Number Music on Vimeo.

I like the music, but I LOVE the video.  Watch for the "yarn zombies."  I wonder
if the costumes were were designed or influenced by Olek.  Her yarn bombing of
Wall Street's Bull is iconic in the yarn world.

My first video!! Learn to Crochet with Yorganza!

I am so excited.  My first project video!  Mary Lawrie was my camera woman.  It tooks us 10 or so takes as I was nervous.  I know, kinda crazy in a world of reailty tv and such, but I like to be the one
behind the camera, so this was a totally new experience for me.

Colorful Cut Paper Art of Jen Stark

"A color is as strong as the impression it creates."  -- Ivan Albright

I recently came across the work of Jen Stark and am mesmerized by the colorful
sculptures, drawings and videos she creates.  She sucks you into her galaxy with
her masterful use of hypnotic color combinations. Just how does she get the paper
to stack in such a manner?  And how does she ship it withoutanything shifting?
Details, details.   For now, I am just going to enjoy and ponder.

video love :: primary colors

"I only use three primaries, so the nice thing is that I can't have favorite colors." -- Chuck Close

I absolutely love this video by Jeff Turick for Sesame Street!  It's a great introduction to color for a children's art class, though trust me, I am going to show it to my college students too.   Take a moment and then pull out your tempera paint and prove to yourself if yellow and blue make green.
